Lift and shift is
a strategy of moving an application or operation from one environment to another
without redesigning the app. As migration to cloud is not a onetime process, it
is a journey not a destination.
To make things more tedious some organizations might lift and shift an application to reduce
on-premises infrastructure environment and reduce cost for a short term but
then redesign the app, once it is in cloud. As nobody wants to do their job
repeatedly after a couple of days and rip everything apart, to start again it
is frustrating to rebuild and repair, it is always right at the first time. If
it had been installed correctly at first place, there would have been no
looking back.
The main advantage of Lift and Shift migration is that you
can use the migration tools to assist you with most of the work in replicating
your reports and metadata. Lift and Shift can also be compared to moving a
household plant from one environment to another; as being in a different
habitat it can affect whether the plant will thrive. Likewise, an IT project
that was started on-premises might not work well in a new location. Lift and
Shift isn’t just cutting and pasting as problems with an application should be
solved before it is migrated to a new environment.
